Good Very Fine. Very Rare.

It has previously been suggested that the Adelphoi Demi ("Brother Peoples") issues were struck for the tetrapolis of Seleukeia, Antioch, Apameia and Laodikeia (see BMC Galatia p. lviii). This was later disproven however by Seyrig and it is now currently thought that the "Brother Peoples" refers to a civic alliance between Antioch and Seleukeia Pieria. Of the four known types of the Adelphoi Demi issue, two depict the jugate heads of the Demoi (HGC 9, 1394-5) which supports the hypothesis that this is an alliance coinage between two cities. Hoover argues in HGC 9 that aside from the portraits Demoi and the reverse type depicting Tyche (HGC 9, 1393), the 'typology of the series is entirely drawn from the regular numismatic iconography of Seleukeia Pieria and Antioch' (p. 293). This specific type is found on the contemporary civic coinage of Seleukeia Pieria (HGC 9, 1387 - dated 147/6 BC).
