CHINA--EMPIRE. Ming Dynasty 400 Cash, Hong Wu, 1368-1398. P-AA4?.

(S/M#T36-4) Printed on mulberry. Large vertical format. Four strings of cash coins at center with denomination above. Obligation and counterfeiting clause at lower center. With printed year at lower left. A note which is believed to be the only known collectible example of the denomination, with reports of another permanently impounded within a museum in China. Appealing quality for the grade with well defined vermilion stamping on both the face and back. Minimal edge distractions with only a clipped lower left corner. A few typical small internal tears but mostly wholesome.

The Ming Dynasty was the ruling dynasty of China for 276 years spanning from 1368 to 1644. During this banknotes circulation period (1368-1398), Zhu Yuanzhang or the Hung Wu Emperor was in power. He was the founder and first emperor of the Ming Dynasty. This dynasty has often been considered one of the greatest eras of orderly government and social stability in human history. The importance of this 400 Cash denomination cannot be understated and we are sure the Numismatic community will be carefully watching when the hammer falls.

PMG Very Fine 25 Net. Tears, Corner Damage.

From the Ernest A. Ikenberry Collection.
