CHINA--EMPIRE. Board of Revenue 50 Taels, Xian Feng, 1851-1861, Yr. 4 (1854). P-A13b.
(S/M#H176-14) Dated year 4, month 7, day 13 of his reign. One of the more important offerings among this highly comprehensive Chinese banknote catalog and a piece which will highlight any collection it enters. Only one of a scant few we have ever handled. The note is of a very large vertical format showing the common for the series bordering design. Dragons are seen at left, right and top with turbulent ocean below. Large square stamped seals positioned over denomination at lower center and also at left. Some typical for the type internal holes at top center and mentioned as "Internal Damage," by PMG. Back shown with several annotations and chops. The last we handled for this date and denomination was a PMG Choice Fine 15 note which realized $38,837 as lot 24042 in our April 2012 Hong Kong sale. PMG Very Fine 20 Net. Internal Damage.

From the Ernest A. Ikenberry Collection.
