Cuzco, Peru (State of South Peru), gold 8 escudos, 1837 BA, FEDERACION, rare, NGC MS 63. KM-167; Fr-91. South Peru produced some of the most beautifully designed coinage in South America during its three-year existence, first as a State within the Peru-Bolivian Confederation and then as its own Republic. The coins feature a deliberate attempt to combine Peru's rich cultural and political symbols. The current coin displays the earlier legend ESTADO SUD PERUANO and four stars representing the four constituent departments of South Peru (Ayacucho, Cuzco, Arequipa, and Puno) on the obverse. On the reverse, a volcano appears on the right and the Inca fortress Qorikancha on the left, with a galleon on waves at the top and a horn of plenty above the word FEDERACION at the bottom. The artistic effect is particularly lovely in gold, specifically the 8 escudos, making for what the numismatic auctioneer Bill Christensen once dubbed "the most beautiful gold coin of the Americas." On the present piece all these symbols stand out against a background of spectacular luster, the only flaw being traces of laminations above the fortress. With tremendous eye-appeal for the grade, very little quality separates this MS 63 coin from the census-topping MS 64's with famous names behind them.

Estimate: 20000 - 30000 USD
