Manila, Philippines (under Spain), 8 reales, 1828 counterstamp (Type I) on a Lima, Peru, 8 reales, 1828 JM, very rare. KM-33; Cal-1303. 26.33 grams. The MANILA / 1828 is rather weak but fully visible along with some border (the host coin's legend bolder) while the other side shows a bold full crowned arms within minimal counterstamp legend (would read HABILITADO POR EL REY N.S.D. FERN. VII.) inside a complete and bold host-coin legend including 1828 date, Lima mintmark and JM assayer, lightly toned, broad-flan Fine overall. The rarity of this counterstamp issue is due to early discontinuation for the fact that there was not enough minting pressure to efface the peripheral host details and show the new border and legend (this piece being a prime example).
Estimate: 2000 - 3000 USD
