Great Britain, small copper alloy Admiral Vernon medal, 1739, Vernon / Porto Bello, ex-Adams. AC-PBv43TT. 5.80 grams; 27 mm. Sharp AU with bright and lustrous surfaces, Vernon's portrait with the usual "banana nose" but also "Orphan Annie hair" (Adams-Chao). Adams' tag indicates acquisition in 2016, six years after the publication of his book, which explains why he selected an inferior example from the ANS collection for the plate piece for these dies. XRF: 39.91% copper, 52.99% zinc, 5.45% lead. Pedigreed to the John Adams Collection (with his handwritten tag).
