Great Britain, copper alloy Admiral Vernon medal, 1739, Vernon / Porto Bello, ex-Adams. AC-PBv44UU. 15.09 grams; 38 mm. Lustrous UNC in bright brass color except for a coppery area (with scratches) behind Vernon's head, very sharply struck, with more tin content than most. Like the preceding lot, this medal is clearly more photogenic than the plate piece for this variety in Adams-Chao, perhaps because Adams acquired it just as the book was being published. 40.01% copper, 51.23% zinc, 6.07% lead, 1.36% tin. Pedigreed to the John Adams Collection (with his handwritten tag) and to Stack's The New York Americana Sale (January 2010), with original lot-tag 4674.

Estimate: 300 - 450 USD
