Obverse: bust of Abraham Lincoln facing right, HON. ABRAHAM LINCOLN. above, 1860 below, ELLIS at truncation. Reverse: Lincoln splitting logs into railroad ties in front of a log cabin, legend above THE RAIL SPLITTER OF THE WEST above. Edge: smooth. Popular Lincoln campaign medal given out during the pivotal election of 1860 to his supporters; Lincoln won the election handily with 180 electoral votes out of 303 total. Just over a month and half later, the first of the Southern states, South Carolina, declared its secession from the Union. Brassy cleaned surfaces with some contact marks, otherwise a nicely detailed example of this desirable and historical campaign medal.
