USA, bronze military decoration, 1898, U.S Naval Campaign West Indies (Spanish-American War), awarded to Apprentice Second Class Jesse C. Newton of the battleship USS Iowa, with bars U.S.S. Iowa, San Juan P.R. (May 12), Santiago (May 31) (June 6) (June 16) (July 2) (July 4), with original red-and-blue ribbon and box of issue. 36.23 grams (medal and one bar); 38mm (medal only); box 3-1/2" x 2-1/4" x 3/4". Phase III Sampson medal (bust of Rear Admiral William E. Sampson on obverse, naval soldiers on reverse, SANTIAGO DE CUBA / JULY 3 in exergue), the edge engraved with JESSE C. NEWTON, APP.2D.C. We have been unable to confirm Jesse C. Newton as being on the USS Iowa's roster. Ribbon degraded but included along with original box and all service bars, some flaking on the box cover.
