Cuba, Banco Espanol de la Habana, 10 pesos contemporary counterfeit, 7-2-1877, serial 335721, PMG Choice Fine 15. Pick-12x. There appear to be two significant periods of counterfeits from this Havana-based bank: those made in the 1870s and those made in 1898 by the American government using the original printing plates during the Spanish-American War. The lack of finer details and inconsistent ink coloration leads us to believe this is the earlier type. And yet, despite the crudity of the lithograph printing, this note apparently saw significant circulation. A few small pinholes are noted along with a few rust spots but otherwise a presentable and interesting piece of Cuban history.
