Byzantine Empire, AV solidus, Heraclius, Heraclius Constantine and Heraclonus, 632-641 AD, NGC Ch AU, strike 5/5, surface 4/5, clipped. DOC 43; MIBE 50; SB 769. 4.34 grams. Heraclius and Heraclius Constantine, both wearing crowns surmounted with crosses, and Heraclonas, uncrowned, standing facing, each holding globus cruciger in their right hand, in upper field to left, cross / Cross potent on base and three steps, CONOB in exergue, Heraclian monogram to left. Popular design featuring emperor Heraclius along with his two sons, Constantine III and Heraclonas, as co-emperors; this was intended to help assert their joint rule after his death. By the end of 641, a year of four Byzantine emperors, Heraclius and Constantine were dead and Heraclonus was deposed and mutilated; Constans II, Constantine's son, ruled the empire by the end of the year. Bold design elements with full emperors and clear cross, some die-clashing on the reverse.
