Santa Margarita: Seville, Spain, gold cob 2 escudos, Philip III, assayer G, NGC MS 62. Fr-189; KM-20. 6.84 grams. Bold full cross and shield with full S-G to left (attributable to the date range 1617-22), sharply sheared edge, rich gold color with muted luster, very rare and desirable as a gold cob from the 1622 Fleet (one of very few examples NGC-graded Mint State), also notably certified as from the original Santa Margarita find in 1980, while the Fishers were still trying to locate the main part of the Atocha. It is worth emphasizing that less than 0.1% of the coins found from the 1622 Fleet were gold. For price reference, just a year ago we auctioned a 1622-dated example in the same grade from the same wreck for $35,000. With original photo-certificate 80M-174. Recovered from: Santa Margarita, sunk in 1622 west of Key West, Florida
Estimate: 15000 - 30000 USD
