USA (Philadelphia Mint), gold $10 Coronet Liberty "eagle," 1840, PCGS AU 55, with pinch of gold, only example recovered from the wreck, Bowers-Manley Plate. Not only is this the only 1840 eagle recovered from the "Ship of Gold," it's also the earliest date among the small group of $10 pieces found. Accordingly, this coin is the plate piece for the type in America's Greatest Treasure Ship: The SS Central America, The Second Treasure-Finding Journey by Q. David Bowers and Dwight Manley. The pale gold surfaces bear light circulation friction for its grade while both sides possess sharp design definition from its high-quality striking. The eagle's shield retains an orange-golden hue from toning. Plated on page 148 of America's Greatest Treasure Ship: The SS Central America, The Second Treasure-Finding Journey by Q. David Bowers and Dwight Manley (2019). Housed in a special PCGS slab with a pinch of gold (about 1.5 grams) from the shipwreck, the label hand-signed by chief scientist Bob Evans, also with promotional cardboard box and certificate from PCGS.
