USA (Philadelphia Mint), gold $5 Classic Liberty "half eagle," 1834, plain 4, PCGS XF 45, with pinch of gold. First year of the "Classic Head" design by Philadelphia Mint's Chief Engraver William Kneass in response to the Act of June 28, 1834, which reduced the weight and composition of gold coinage. Also, this is the earliest date among half eagles found on the SS Central America. Circulation wear on the high points yet with plentiful detail throughout, pale gold surfaces as is typical with gold coins from the wreck. Housed in a special PCGS slab with a pinch of gold (about 1.5 grams) from the shipwreck, the label hand-signed by chief scientist Bob Evans, also with promotional cardboard box and certificate from PCGS. Recovered from: S.S. Central America, sunk in 1857 in deep water off North Carolina

Estimate: 2500 - 3750 USD
