USA (Philadelphia Mint), gold octagonal 1/4 dollar token, 1856, PCGS MS 63+ Prooflike, with pinch of gold. BG-111. A spectacular prooflike example of a California gold token in a popular and unusual octagonal shape, looking just like the day it was made! Only 17 examples of this BG-111 type were recovered during the 2014 SS Central America Expedition; of that number, 14 were designated by PCGS as prooflike and all were graded Mint State, indicating some hoarding and lack of circulation amongst these later California gold types. The proof fields of this coin contrast with a slight frostiness to the design, and the surfaces have an even, buttery golden color. Housed in a special PCGS slab with a pinch of gold (about 1.5 grams) from the shipwreck, the label hand-signed by chief scientist Bob Evans, also with promotional cardboard box and certificate from PCGS. Recovered from: S.S. Central America, sunk in 1857 in deep water off North Carolina

Estimate: 1000 - 1500 USD
