Guatemala, gold 16 pesos, 1869 R, Carrera, NGC AU 58. KM-188; Fr-39. Choice mirrorlike luster and faint reddish toning, with typical bagmarks but also light surface hairlines for the net grade. It is interesting to note that this series issued a base-8 denomination system (4-8-16 pesos) concurrently with a base-10 system (5-10-20 pesos), the former not just in smaller weights but also in lower fineness (0.875 versus 0.900).
