GREAT BRITAIN. 5 Pounds, 1697. Exchequer Bill. PCGS Banknote Very Fine 30 Details. Partially Backed, Minor Adhesive Residue.
Embossed seal. Pen cancelled. 29th July, 1697. Penned signature of Sir Robert Howard. Howard would die about a year after this note was issued. He led a busy life during the English Civil War (as a Royalist; he was knighted on the field of battle), and held many high-power positions in the years after the Civil War. He also authored anti-clerical books, which stirred pamphlet wars. He was also involved in numerous scandals with the Exchequer. This note is a neat piece of history, and a miracle of survival. For accuracy, we note annotations. PCGS Banknote comments "Partially Backed, Minor Adhesive Residue."
