ITALIAN SOMALILAND. Cassa per la Circolazione Monetaria della Somalia. 100 Somali, 1950. P-15a. PMG Superb Gem Uncirculated 67 EPQ.
1950 saw Italian rule come back to their old colony of Italian Somaliland, after being controlled by the British Military Administration after Italy lost the territory in 1941 during WWII. The United Nations allowed Italy control of the territory under a trusteeship, which lasted until 1960 when Somalia gained independence from colonial rule. This 100 Somali denomination was the highest issued during the 1950 series, and it is an anomaly of survival in this condition. Out of a dozen graded by PMG for the catalog number, this note is tied with two others for the spot of Top Pop.

A lion is depicted at left, gazing prideful off to the distance. A watermark of a lion is also at right, and both designs are surrounded by intricately lathed designs. The colors are vibrant and the paper is incredibly bright. The margins are broad, offering plentiful paper and attractive centering of the design.
