Ottoman Empire. Selim II. AH 974-982 / AD 1566-1574. Iron cuboid counterfeiter's die (27mm, 140.16 g). Three of the six faces engraved as reverse dies for silver dirhams from Baghdad, Erzurum (?) and an uncertain mint (this corroded). Some corrosion. Near VF. Extremely rare.
The sides opposite each of the three engraved faces of this cuboid die are all blank, so that no engraved side would be damaged when striking a coin. It is remarkable that the counterfeiter should have prepared a die naming mints which are more than six hundred miles apart. Enough remains of the third face to show that it was engraved for a similar type of dirham, but the mint name cannot be read with certainty
