THRACE. Byzantion. Circa 240-220 BC. 9 Obols (Silver, 20 mm, 5.64 g, 1 h), Phoenician standard, struck under the magistrate Antipatros. Veiled head head of Demeter to right, wearing simple grain wreath. Rev. Poseidon, draped from the waist, seated to right on a pile of stones, holding an aphlaston in his outstretched right hand and, over his left shoulder with his left, his trident; in the field to left, ΠΥ; in the field to right, monogram of ΝΕΟ; in the exergue, ΕΠΙ ΑΝΤΙΠΑΤΡΟΥ . Schönert-Geiss, Byzantion 1036 (V7/R10) = SNG Copenhagen 487 (same dies?). Well-struck, well-centered and toned. A few minor marks, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.
From a Swiss collection, formed prior to 2005.

Demeter is here shown as a matronly woman, no longer a young goddess.
