KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III 'the Great', 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 17.14 g, 11 h), struck posthumously, under Seleukos I Nikator, Antigoneia-on-the-Orontes, circa 300 BC. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion's skin headdress. Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Zeus seated left on low throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and, in his right, eagle standing right with closed wings; in the field to left, X; below throne, Φ. HGC 9, 9a. Price 3192. SC 28.1a. Attractive and struck in high relief. Nearly extremely fine.

Antigoneia was founded by Antigonos Monophthalmos in 306 but was abandoned soon after he was defeated and killed at Ipsos in 301; the population was moved by Seleukos I to the nearby site of his newly founded city of Seleukeia Pieria. It is thought that the present coin was struck by Seleukos in Antigoneia while Seleukeia was being built.
