EUBOIA. Karystos. Circa 235-200 BC. Stater (Silver, 21 mm, 7.18 g, 1 h). Male head to right, wearing a laureate diadem tied at the back of his head. Rev. [KA]PYΣTIΩN Nike driving galloping biga to left, holding palm branch in her right hand and the reins in her left; between Nike and the horses, left facing trident head within a wreath. BCD Euboia 578 (this coin). Wallace, Tyrant group 2 (obv-./rev 7). An attractive piece with a realistic portrait of an unknown leader. Both sides very lightly double struck, otherwise, good very fine.
From a European collection, ex Pecunem 11, 29 December 2013, 193, and from the BCD Collection, Lanz 111, 25 November 2002, 578, acquired from Bank Leu in January 1983.

Exactly who is portrayed on the obverse of this coin - the first head of the series is clearly that of Apollo, but all the remaining are heads of one (or more?) real men - is anyone's guess! He resembles no suitable Macedonian ruler, he is surely not Seleukid, and he's certainly not Nabis of Sparta! No doubt he is simply a local notable whose name has been lost in the mists of time.
