ATTICA. Athens. Circa 165-42 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 27 mm, 16.71 g, 12 h), struck under the magistrates Themisto(kles), Theopompos and Aristo(kles), 117-116. Head of Athena Parthenos to right, wearing triple-crested Attic helmet adorned with five horse heads and Pegasos. Rev. Rev. A-ӨE / ΘΕΜ-ΙΣΤΟ / ΘΕΟ/ΠΟΜ/ΠΟΣ / ΑΡΙ/ΣΤΟ Owl standing right, head facing, on overturned Panatheniac amphora; to right, trophy on galley prow to right; uncertain letter on amphora; ΣΦ below; all within olive wreath. HGC 4, 1602. Thompson 604d. Perfectly centered and well struck. Rough surfaces and traces of corrosion, otherwise, about extremely fine.

The chief magistrate of this coin has claimed to be a descendant of the great Athenian hero, Themistokles. Not only does he bear the same name, but also uses as symbol a trophy on a galley prow, a direct reference to the great naval victory at Salamis.
