MOESIA, Istros. Early 1st century BC. Æ (18mm, 2.78 g, 12h). Auxē–, magistrate. Laureate head of Apollo right; c/m: facing head of Dionysos wearing ivy wreath in incuse circle / Sea-eagle left, grasping dolphin with talons; laurel branch to left, AYΞH below. CN Online Type 7261; AMNG I 476 var. (magistrate); HGC 3, –; SNG Stancomb 210 corr. (magistrate). Earthen green patina. Near VF. Very rare, only one example in CN database, two examples of this issue on CoinArchives (one of which is the Stancomb coin, the other has a different magistrate).

From the Dr. Michael Slavin Collection.

Although the magistrate of the Stancomb coin is listed as AYT, a close inspection of the enlarged photo of the coin in CoinArchives shows that it is more likely that the third letter is a Ξ, rather than a T. This issue should not be confused with the much earlier, and common, bronzes with the same types, which lack the laurel branch and are struck on thick flans.
