Gold half-sovereign, 1892. London. No JEB Low shield DISH L516.
The production of half-sovereigns was held back for several years to steer the public towards increased use of silver coins. The Double-florin was introduced to help in this process. However, by 1892 it stood clear that the half-sovereign was irreplaceable as it was much needed in trade and very popular with the public. The production of Double-florin coins was halted and a large number of half-sovereigns were struck: 13,680,486.
Crowned and veiled Jubilee bust facing left; no JEB on truncation; inscription: VICTORIA DEI GRATIA BRIT: REGINA F: D:. / Lower, crowned and embellished shield-of-arms; date in exergue; BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF:.
