NORWAY: Carl XIV Johan, 1818-1844, AR ½ speciedaler (60 skilling), 1827, KM-302, NM-20A, variety with colon after Skl, blazing luster on both sides, a fantastically rare example in this condition and the single finest example at either NGC or PCGS for this date (1/0), PCGS graded MS64. Charles XIV John (né Jean Bernadotte) was born in France and a marshal of the Napoleonic Empire when. In 1810, he was unexpectedly elected as the crown prince to the childless Charles XIII of Sweden and Norway. Napoleon supported this idea but asked that he never take up arms against France. Bernadotte refused on the ground of his obligations to Sweden, to which Napoleon exclaimed "Go, and let our destinies be accomplished" and signed the act of emancipation unconditionally. This decision would prove fateful as the new crown prince would go on to forge an alliance with Prussia and Sweden's perennial enemy, Russia, which would decisively defeat Napoleon in the War of the Sixth Coalition.
