Admiral Edward Vernon was a British naval commander during the War of Jenkins' Ear in 1739. He squared off with Admiral Blas of the Spanish Navy and took the port of Porto Bello, now in Panama, with only six ships. Consequently, he became very popular in England and the American colonies, and was commemorated on many medals.
