ABBASID: Ibrahim b. 'Abd Allah, rebel, 762-763, AR dirham (2.65g), al-Basra, AH145, A-F214, SICA-3:573, standard obverse, but special reverse, with just Allah / ahad / ahad in the field and Qur'an verse 17:81 in the margin, attractive VF, RRRR. Ibrahim b. 'Abd Allah was a great-grandson of the Shi'ite imam al-Hasan b. 'Ali. Along with his brother Muhammad, they revolted in late 762 AD against the second Abbasid caliph, al-Mansur, in response to the latter's mounting prosecution of the Alids. While Muhammad's revolt in Medina was quickly suppressed, Ibrahim achieved initial success from al-Basra and gained control over Ahwaz, Fars, and Wasit. He also issued his own coins, which feature the Quranic verse ja' al-haqq wa zahaqa al-batil inn al-batil kana zuhuqan ("Truth has come and falseness has vanished, for surely, falseness is ever bound to vanish"). However, internal dissent among Shi'ite factions forestalled any meaningful resistance against al-Mansur, whose army annihilated Ibrahim's forces in February 763, thus putting an end to the Alid rebellion.A similar example was sold in our Auction 25, Lot 230.
