ABBASID: al-Mu'tamid, 870-892, AR dirham (3.13g), uncertain mint, AH265, A-240.5var, emergency issue, citing al-Mu'tamid's heir al-Muwaffaq on the obverse, with the correct date for al-Muwaffaq, muled with an old reverse die of the previous caliph al-Mu'tazz, VF, RRR. Another example of the same dies was offered in our Auction 31, Lot 337. The mint name resembles "m.s.t.f.r." (ending in "'ayn" or "ghayn"), but has never been identified, probably located either in the Caucasus or more likely in eastern Khorasan or Badakhshan, perhaps related to the silver mines at Banjhir and Andaraba.
Estimate: 140-180 USD
