SAFAVID: Sultan Husayn, 1694-1722, AR presentation 20 shahi (36.26g), Isfahan, AH1116, A-U2673, lengthy couplet, mint and date // the Shi'ite kalima and the names of the 12 Shi'ite Imams; same design and legends as the 10 shahi denomination dated AH1115 (A-V2673, Rabino-22), unpublished for the 20 shahi equivalent with the 5-line legend; lightly cleaned; superb quality, never mounted, incredibly magnificent! choice EF, RRRR. The couplet translates as "In this world, Sultan Husayn, the dog at the threshold of the commander of the believers (i.e., 'Ali b. Abi Talib), became master of the die, by the grace of the Lord of the Two Easts." The "Two Easts" probably refers to Iraq and Iran. The 20 shahi of this type has only been previously recorded dated AH1112, from a unique specimen sold in Heritage Sale 3021, Lot 21759 (same reverse die, 4-line obverse legend).
