SIKH EMPIRE: AR rupee (11.07g), Dar Jhang / Amritsar, VS1873, KM-20.1a, Herrli-01.09.04, cf. ONS Newsletter vol. 143 (1995), with mint name Amritsar at the top and dar jhang in left center, both on reverse, with trisul below the leaf on reverse; a few banker's marks on the edge, without any testmarks on the surfaces, lovely VF-EF, RR, ex Butalia Collection. The meaning of "dar jhang" has never been satisfactorily determined. Perhaps it is a local spelling of the Persian "dar jang" ("at war") referring to the victorious Sikh advances that took place in 1816-1817 (VS1873-1874).

Estimate: 500-700 USD
