João V gold 1600 Reis 1731/27-M MS61 NGC, Minas Gerais mint, KM125, cf. LMB-268 (overdate unlisted). Conditionally and aesthetically exceptional. Although labeled as a 1731/21 overdate, a 7 is clearly visible above the final digit, suggesting a 1731/27 overdate, a speculation supported by the fact that this series was first issued in 1727. Interestingly, the facets confirm a die match to the copper Pattern 1600 Reis 1731-M that we brought to auction in September 2018 and showcases ample detail on the motifs that the circulated Pattern has since lost. When looking for conditional contextualization, there are only four 1731 examples certified at NGC, all bearing a clear 1731/27 overdate but evidently rendered from a different die; three of those examples grade VF Details, and the fourth, Clipped, displays an equivalent VF state of preservation. The offering's aesthetic caliber only increases its desirability. In hand, luster flashes in the crevices, leading one to imagine that this piece once touted a Prooflike appeal. Surely, the demand for this coin will match its originality and fitness.
