João Prince Regent 960 Reis 1811/81-R UNC Details (Cleaned) NGC, Rio de Janeiro mint, KM307.3, cf. LMB-421 (re-engraved date unlisted), J.Vinicius-505. Overstruck on a Spanish Colonial 8 Reales. An exceedingly scarce engraving error where the die-sinker engraved the dies with a 1881 date, later noticing and erasing the 8 to replace it with the correct 1 punch. From the entire 960 Reis series, this seems to be the only occasion were the re-engraving of a date was due to a mistake of the laborers and not a simple overdate (such as 1818/7-R or 1816/5-B). Long-ago cleaned, this piece bears a light ash tone over the crisp motifs making it easy to spot the date error. An obscure engraving error which will likely garner the attention of advanced 960 Reis collectors.
