Germany, a late 18th or early 19th century set of scales and weights, by Johann Wilhelm Forsthoff, Jr. of Solingen (1771-1848), steel scales with brass pans and 20 (of 22) square weights for European gold coinage, most with the "Bergischer Löwe" mark, empty lidded partition for fractional weights, all inset into rectangular maple-wood case, 2 brass clasps, maker's label fills entire lid, additional brand stamp in the lower right corner: "JUSTIRT", below a crown of lilies, 190 x 108 x 24mm., in excellent condition
Johann Wilhelm Forsthoff came from a family of scale-makers and was the son of Johann Forsthoff (1728-1787) and the nephew of Johann Philipp Herberts (1736-1778).
