"Andre Lopez de Castro", an English bronze seal, c. 1790 - 1800, for impressing into glass bottles of Água de Inglaterra; 38mm.; Georgian coin weights, for Portuguese gold coins to the value of 27s, 21s and 13s 6d, perhaps related; a second, smaller seal, "I N. WITTON", 28mm., curious and very fine (5)
"André Lopez de Castro is associated with the export "English water" (Água de Inglaterra), an infusion of cinchona bark that was introduced to Portugal at the end of the 17th century by Dr. Fernando Mendès. The latter died soon after and, later on, it was Jacob de Castro Sarmento, doctor in London and author of a treatise on the use and abuse of cinchona (London, 1756), who in turn spread the remedy in Portugal. André Lopez de Castro continued the work of his uncle and the remedy became widespread, at the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th, in Portugal and Brazil. Our bottles must date from the same period, late 18th or early 19th, which saw the wide diffusion of English water, a remedy for fevers".
We should like to acknowledge Bouteillesancieniennes for the information on Andre Lopez de Castro.

Estimate: 100 - 150 GBP
