The 'MD' of edge date formed of C's, reversed C's and I's. The medal was issued by Boulton's son and successor, Matthew Robinson Boulton, and Pollard records the history of the delays surrounding its production. The reverse legend (from Virgil, Aen. VI, 663), ends with the corrected spelling, ARTIS translated "those who have enriched life by discovering arts".
