MACEDON. Acanthus. Circa 470-430 BC. AR tetradrachm (30mm, 16.83 gm, 3h). Lion right, attacking a bull kneeling to left with upraised head; in exergue fish to left / ΑΚΑ-ΝΘΙ-ΟΝ in raised letters on incuse band, around raised quadripartite square, all within shallow incuse square. Desneux 95 variant (lion has curled tail). SNG ANS 13-14 variant (slightly different incuse). An absolutely incredible coin, deeply struck on a broad, round flan, with full, fiery luster in fields enhanced by a hint of iridescent toning. The finest Acanthus piece we have encountered!
