MACEDONIAN KINGDOM. Alexander III the Great (336-323 BC). AR tetradrachm (34mm, 16.72 gm, 11h). Pergamum, under Attalus I, struck ca. 215-200 BC. Head of Heracles right of fine style (features of Alexander), wearing lion skin headdress / ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ, Zeus seated left on high backed throne; holding eagle in his right hand and long scepter in his left; beneath arm, AΙ, palm branch in inner left field. Price 1485 variant (AI instead of ΔI symbol, letters and palm branch positioned differently. Seemingly an unrecorded variant! A marvelous piece, struck on a broad planchet with dies of refined style and beautifully toned. Choice Extremely Fine. From The Lexington Collection. The very distinctive facial features on Heracles on this attractive late posthumous issue of Pergamum, including the "anastole" (or cowlick) of hair atop the forehead and the deep-set eye, leave little doubt it is intended to represent the great conqueror himself.
