PHOENICIA. Tyre. 126/5 BC-AD 65/6. AR shekel (25mm, 14.11 gm, 12h). Dated CY 158 (AD 32/3). Bust of Melqart right, wearing laurel wreath, lion-skin around neck / TYPOY IEPAΣ KAI AΣYΛOY, Eagle standing left on prow, palm frond over wing; to left, PNH (date) above club; to right, KP above monogram; Phoenician letter between legs. Cf. HGC 10, 357 (unlisted date). RPC -. Cf. Classical Numismatic Group 90 (23 May 2012), lot 708 for the same date, though more off-center than this specimen (also from the Patrick Tan Collection). One of four known, and apparently one of only two in private hands (the other two being in the Kadman Numismatic Pavillion, Eretz-Israel, Tel Aviv). An excessively rare date. Toned.
