Augustus (27 BC-AD 14). AV aureus (20mm, 7.82 gm, 3h). Lugdunum, AD 13-14. CAESAR AVGVSTVS DIVI F PATER PATRIAE, laureate head of Augustus right / AVG F TR POT XV, Tiberius, laureate and holding eagle-tipped scepter and palm branch, standing in car of triumphal quadriga walking right, the first and third horses with heads reverted; TI CAESAR in exergue. RIC 223 (R3). BMCRE 508. Cohen 299 variant (horse heads all facing right). Calicó 295 (this coin illustrated). Very rare. An exceptional specimen, struck on a broad flan, with lovely surfaces. On this rare aureus type, Augustus touts his stepson Tiberius, son of his wife Livia by her previous marriage to Tiberius Claudius Nero, as his heir and intended successor. A capable general, Tiberius had campaigned long and hard in Dalmatia, Raetia and Germania over a 20-year military career. His dour personality did not endear him to his stepfather, however, and Augustus tried every other available option before, finally and reluctantly, settling on Tiberius to preserve the Principate. After the Varian disaster in AD 9, Tiberius abruptly and rushed north with newly raised legions to restore the situation. Bitter fighting over a two-year period stabilized the Rhine frontier, and Tiberius was able to return to Rome in AD 12 to receive a long-delayed Triumph, described by Suetonius: "Before turning to enter the Capitol, he dismounted from his chariot and fell at the knees of his father (i.e. Augustus), who was presiding over the ceremonies." The scene of Tiberius in his triumphal quadriga was widely depicted on coins, gems, and other visual arts, all of which helped to solidify his position as Augustus' heir.
