In AD 100 the Roman Senate awarded Trajan the title of Optimus Princeps, "Best of Emperors," a title he proudly displayed on his coinage and public inscriptions. It is seen on the reverse of this coin enclosed within the Corona Civica, an oak wreath awarded to a soldier who had saved the life of military comrade or fellow citizen.
