Julian II, as Caesar (AD 355-360). AV semissis (17mm, 2.27 gm, 6h).  Antioch, AD 355-361. IVLIAN-VS CAES, bareheaded, draped and cuirassed bust of Julian right, with close-cropped hair, seen from front / VICTORIA AVGVSTORVM, Victory seated right on cuirass, shield behind, supporting and inscribing shield with eight-rayed star, Cupid standing before supporting shield, •SMAN• in exergue. RIC --, cf. 176 (no dots in mintmark). Depeyrot 13/2. Cohen 56. Extremely rare denomination! NGC (photo-certificate) Choice VF 5/5 - 4/5. From The Andre Constantine Dimitriadis Collection. Ex Dreesman Collection (Spink London, 13 April 2000), lot 211; J. Vinchon (Monte Carlo, 23 April 1976), lot 275. The semissis, or half-gold solidus, is a rare and seldom-issued denomination that is often confused with another coin of roughly similar weight, the gold 1.5 scripulum or 9 siliqua piece. They were likely struck and issued only for special occasions, like the British Maundy Money of more recent centuries.
