Gaius 'Caligula,' with Divus Augustus (AD 37-41). AR denarius (20mm, 3.68 gm, 6h). Rome, ca. AD 37-38. C CAESAR AVG GERM P M TR POT, laureate head of Caligula right / DIVVS AVG PATER PATRIAE, radiate head of Augustus right. RIC 16. RSC 2. Very rare. Well struck on a nice, round flan, with full legends both sides. Lightly toned. Extremely Fine. Ex Gerhard Hirsch 289 (2 May 2013), lot 669.Despite being perhaps the worst of all Roman emperors, Caligula's coinage is interesting and attractive. As he had few, if any, real accomplishments to tout, his reverse types place great stress on his blue-blooded lineage. His detailed portrait on this well-struck and denarius seems to hint at his cruel, capricious nature, while the reverse depicts his great-grandfather, Augustus.
