Hadrian (AD 117-138). AR denarius (17mm, 3.34 gm, 5h). Rome, ca. AD 119-122. IMP CAESAR TRAIAN HADRIANVS AVG, laureate bust right, slight drapery on far shoulder / P M TR P COS III, Victroy standing right, foot on globe, erecting trophy. RIC -. RSC -. A previously unknown type! NGC AU★ 5/5 - 5/5. Though there are many different reverse types involving Victory, especially for the coinage of Hadrian, this type was apparently unknown for this emperor. In fact, a cursory search for this type on the coinage of other emperors reveals that this reverse type may be unique for all Roman imperial coinage. What sets this apart from other "Victory erecting trophy" types is the fact that Victory on this specimen clearly has her left foot set upon a globe. The propagandistic connotations are obvious, though what is not so obvious is why such a lovely type was never used for Roman Imperial coinage before or after this particular issue.
