Gordian III (AD 238-244). AR "denomination set" of three AR coins. Includes: (1) AR denarius (20mm, 3.03 gm, 12h). Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Gordian right / Pietas standing facing, head left, arms lifted in prayer. RIC IV 129. RSC 186. Matte surfaces. Good Extremely Fine // (2) AR antoninianus (22mm, 4.75 gm, 6h). Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Gordian right / Hercules standing right, leaning on club. RIC IV 95. RSC 404. Toned Good Extremely Fine // (3) AR "double antoninianus" (22mm, 7.22 gm, 7h). Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Gordian right / Fortuna seated left, holding cornucopia and tiller. Cf. RIC 210 and RSC 98a (regular weight). Reverse struck from worn die, otherwise Nearly Extremely Fine. Note: The last piece is unrecorded as a "double antoninianus," but, by design or error, the weight of 7.22 grams is easily double that of most antoniniani issued in the period.
