George VI Proof Penny 1947-(P), Perth mint, KM36, PR65 Brown PCGS. An impressive Gem - free of all visible post-strike handling with muted red coloration that suggests long-term box or envelope storage. The surfaces, largely of gleaming quality, easily distinguish themselves from business strikes of the period. Unlike the majority of business strikes, the strike confidently renders the edges, displaying bold denticles and rims that are sharply squared off. Even so, slight planchet chatter remains on the highpoints, perhaps indicative of their relative unfamiliarity with the proofing processes.Proof Pennies of George VI are rare, and the 1947 date is no exception, with the last recorded offering according to accessible archived records occurring in a 2001 Noble auction where a Halfpenny and Penny were sold as a lot. In all likelihood, the copper denominations were struck as two-coin sets, intended for distribution to high level mint officials, heads of government and important banks. For this reason, it is reasonably safe to assume that mintage figures for the sets remained below 50, with the record of public appearances for nearly all dates suggesting a much lower number. Whatever the actual circumstances behind their manufacture and distribution, their rarity has been long-recognized and their acquisition has been avidly pursued by specialists. As such, we're confident the present offering, the first in some time, will be greeted with unbridled enthusiasm - one of the highlights of the sale!

Estimate: 30000-40000 USD
