Jean III le Triumphant (1312-55) gold Écu d'or au chaise 1338-50, Antwerp mint, Fr-4, Schneider-226, Delmonte-223, MS64 NGC. + LVDOVICVS : DЄI x | x GRΛ x | COMЄS x Ƶ : DnS : FLΛD, Duke seated facing on Gothic throne, a sword in his right hand and a shield with a two-headed eagle supported by his left; all within a tressure of arches with trefoils in the spandrels / + XPC : VInCIT : XPC : RЄGNΛT : XPC : INPЄRΛT, cross fleurée in quadrilobe with leaves on cusps and trefoils in spandrels. A stunning example of this early Brabantine issue with legends of Ludwig IV, the Holy Roman Emperor at the time. The surfaces are fully lustrous and the strike left only traces of ghosting in the central devices while weakness in the legends is likely attributable to die-wear.
