Joao V gold 20000 Reis 1724-M, Vila Rica mint, KM117, Russo-248, MS62 NGC. Four-year type. Striking for this impressively large issue began late in the year in 1724, resulting in fewer examples struck when compared to the later dates. As such, the 1724 20000 Reis, or Dobrao, has long been considered the key to the type with much fewer survivors than its 1725, 1726 and 1727 counterparts. At top grades, the disparity is even greater, making Uncirculated examples truly important condition rarities. The present coin is just that. The strike was accomplished with impressive sophistication, fully detailing the denticles at the edges as well as the central shield and cross, and the high points are free of friction. The fields, largely but not entirely protected by the design, remain vividly lustrous with minor ticks here and there that account for the grade. Altogether, a seldom rivaled coin and certain to be a focal point in the next cabinet it enters.
Estimate: 30000-40000 USD
