George V Specimen 25 Cents 1921, Ottawa mint, KM24a, SP64 PCGS. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, we're happy to announce another, "major rarity - the first we have seen!". While we've offered numerous examples of the far more visible 5 cents and 50 cent denominations of this date, never have we had the pleasure of bringing the quarter to auction. A coin that certainly rests in the shadows, if the world was just, it would certainly grab more spotlight. Issued as a part of the startlingly elusive Specimen sets of the year, only a handful of survivors remain today. Missing from Norweb...missing from Pittman...missing from Belzberg this denomination seems to have eluded all those that certainly would have acquired one if they had the chance. And to add further perspective - our search confirms that this will be the first public offering of the type during the "internet age". Like many of the silver survivors from this set, it has toned in non-predictive patterns. The patina, mostly golden and olive in hue, drifts without boundary over the surfaces, touching what it pleases and then softening without cause. Beneath the tone, the iconic satin texture of these sets remains apparent and the swirling die polish lines (as made) that always accompany the fields can be seen. Not a touch of mishandling can be detailed, but lack of full sharpness at the bottom of the wreath is detected. One of only four seen by the grading services, and a certainty to become tightly held like the others. From The Prager Collection of Canadian Specimen Coins
