Newfoundland. Victoria bronze Pattern Specimen 5 Cents 1864, London mint, NF-2, Bowman-28, SP63 Red and Brown PCGS. Plain Edge - Coin Alignment. Nearly entirely brown with glinting reflectivity in the fields and variegated shades of iridescent patina sprinkled around both sides. Inspection with a loupe confirms a full strike with nearly microscopic handling in the left obverse field that accounts for the grade. The design, a muling of provincial dies, pairs the adopted design for the obverse with a New Brunswick 5 cent reverse. Quite possibly unique in this off-metal form or any other. When cataloged as a part of the Norweb Collection, it was mentioned that an example was offered in the 1925 sale of the famous W.W.C. Wilson Collection, however, with no confirmed second example coming to market in the 17 years since Norweb (when census keeping got much better), it would seem logical to assume that the two coins are if fact the same. For the sake of thoroughness, a digital search of the British Museum and the National Currency Collection of Canada was also performed with no hits. The only example graded at PCGS or NGC and a landmark opportunity for the Canadian connoisseur.Ex. William B.
